Horn house is a single family residential house that reacts to its context. The house is trying to be as compact as possible leaving more yard space. The house and the yard are designed as part of one organism. The silhouette of the building that continues the yard space in the vertical plane resembles the horn of an old gramophone. This form is not an accident. The house opens its south façade as a horn towards the sun and in the same time turns its back to the north with an almost imperforated screen. This scheme can be found in the plans as well, where the service areas form a buffer space to the north, that ensures the comfort living and leaves the south façade entirely occupied with the windows of the living spaces. The living spaces are covered with wood paneling, and placed comfortably in the crook of the horn. The top floor keeps them from overheating with its slight projecting, which also underlines the silhouette. The level difference in the terrain allows for an underground level with parking space for two cars. The fence from the street ensures privacy to the courtyard and is also part of the concept for a unified organism house-courtyard. The projects aims at creating a variety of spaces with different characteristics that have advantages during the different seasons of the year: the living spaces are connected to a semi-covered porch, sunny courtyard, part of which is shaded by a shed structure, a garage with a rear backyard and a space in front of the front door hidden from the neighbors’ eyes.
