Transmariska plaza hotel is situated in a unique context with great natural, cultural and historical potential. The terrain of the hotel is located on the banks of the Danube River with a spectacular view of both the river and of the renovated riverside park. The terrain has a significant displacement in north-south direction and contains an existing restaurant building scheduled for demolition. The archaeological research done in the city of Tutrakan provides information about the Roman fortress “Transmariska” dated back to 3rd century BC. The section of the fortress wall with the north gate is exposed in close proximity to the terrain of the hotel as part of the riverside park. From south the city's skyline is characterized by two-storey buildings with historical status of a group cultural heritage. Responding to the conditions of the context and fulfilling the customer-requested program, Conveyer created a spatial structure, which is based on the following reference points:
Terraced construction. This method of construction allows, on the one hand, the silhouette of the hotel to fit in the riverside landscape with the dominating presence of the Danube River, and on the other hand, the reduction in the number of storeys of the hotel in west-east direction corresponds to the existing historic buildings. The terraced construction contributes to the mastering of the steep terrain and enables the hotel balconies to get both impressive views of the river and the necessary intimacy, one to another.
Rotation of the urban network. The orientation of the modern urban network of the city of Turtakan is in the northwest – southeast direction. In contrast, the structure of the hotel is directed according to the ancient Roman “cardo” with a north-south direction. This enables the Roman cardo to be exposed and to become an attractive urban passage that passes through the hotel structure and connects the riverside park with the busy “Transmariska” street.
Vertical and horizontal landscaping. Considering the hotel structure as part of the riverside park, the envisaged vertical and horizontal area landscaping of the roofs and facades allows the achievement of a high quality of the environment.
Following the customer’s requirements, three options for the hotel have been developed, each exploring the possibility of integrating the existing restaurant building: 1st option - removal of the building, 2nd option - partial retention, 3rd option - complete preservation of the building. The 1st option has been selected for realization.
