The project’s site is situated in the oldest neighborhood of Sofia city. With its heyday in the years before and after World War II, today it consists of old aristocratic houses close to their ends. However, there is, although slow, a strategy for renovating the buildings helped by the newly opened west line of Sofia’s underground nearby. Most of the newly built residential buildings meet a single criteria - one hundred percent utilization of the land and building volume. The buildings are built side by side, with minimal free yard areas and often adversely illuminated housing.
conveyer’s aspiration was to create a structure with unified and strong character that is able to resist the surrounding chaotic pile of building mass, materials, colors and ornaments. The structure consists of two elements – a stone envelope and a wood core. The envelope is perforated in order for the apartments to have good sunlight illumination and the core of the structure overflows to create the top two floors. The building has two underground parking floors, two floors of shops facing the shopping street "Pirotska" and six residential floors, four of which are standard, and the last two roof floors are organized as a luxury penthouse. We developed versions of residential units differing by floor area with the possibility of them being combined without losing the good level of solar illumination.
The idea for the building was inspired by conveyer’s desire to set a benchmark for quality of life of residents, for now and for the future, by creating a clear and intelligent intervention in the city environment.
